|Lawrence Sunflower Cooperative - Kalidasa|
Sunflower Cooperative members Ben, Beth, Dana and Jamie read a poem by Kalidasa. Guitar by Brylie. I sat in the South Lounge at the Lawrence Sunflower Cooperative and encouraged members, walking by, to read a the Kalidasa poem into the mic. The guitar melody was inspired by Kat earlier that day as we hung out at South Park on Massachusetts street.

Written in the 4th century by India's greatest Sanskrit poet Mahakavi Kalidasa, Megha Sandesha (The Cloud Messenger) is considered to be one of the greatest Mahakavyas set to the 'mandakranta' meter known for its lyrical sweetness. Megha Sandesha tells the tale of a young demigod, banished to earth, who sends a message (sandesha) to his beloved wife in the heavens through a passing rain cloud (megha)...

One of MahaKavi Kalidasa's greatest works, Kumarasambhava contains 18 sargas - some critics maintain that Kalidasa wrote only the first eight chapters of the epic poem. The work describes the marriage of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati. It begins with a fine description of that giant among mountains, the Himalaya. MahaKavi Kalidasa's second epic is 'Raghuvamsha'. With nineteen chapters ('sargas') in this poem, the epic describes the history of the kings Dileepa, Raghu, Aja, Dasharatha, Sri Rama, Lava and Kusha. It also deals briefly with the twenty kings from Nala up to Agnivarna. Raghuvamsha depicts Bharata Varsha's ancient, historical culture and tradition. Our ancestors had discussed in detail about such matters as to who could be a good ruler, who is a man of 'tapas' (penance), how one should lead a g...
